CONNECT WITH BLACK BARCELONA
As Barcelona and the world continue to change, so do the opportunities for people from the African diaspora. You may have dropped in on a lecture or presentation by a famous author or activist, like Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie or Angela Davis. Or maybe you attended a concert by any number of great talents, such as Nina Simone, Youssou N’Dour, Idris Elba, or Beyonce. If you're really lucky, you might spot a world-famous family, like the Obamas walking around.
Even if you don't see celebrities during your time in Barcelona, you've probably overheard Black speakers of Spanish, Catalan, French, Portuguese, English, various versions of Creole, as well as Arabic, Berber, Bronge, Mandinga, Ndowe, Wolof, and other indigenous languages from across Africa. Some are probably tourists, but many are also students, shopkeepers, entrepreneurs, and the everyday folks who are part of the fabric of today’s city. Get to know them, too. Stop by the city's Black-owned restaurants - many of which are clustered in Raval - listen to live jazz, do some networking, or enjoy spoken word performances. Black Barcelona is growing; enjoy multiple ways of connecting with the community.
